Processing difficult experiences and moving forward

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy approach that helps people process traumatic or distressing experiences that continue to affect their emotions, thoughts, relationships, or daily lives.

Sometimes, our minds and bodies continue to respond to something from the past as though it is happening in the present. This can show up as anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional triggers, avoidance, difficulty trusting others, or feeling stuck in painful patterns.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR uses a structured process that involves briefly focusing on a distressing memory, emotion, belief, or sensation while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other alternating stimulation.

You don’t have to spend entire sessions talking about or reliving a traumatic experience. Instead, your therapist guides you through a structured process designed to help you safely process what happened and reduce the intensity associated with the memory.

EMDR may be helpful for:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood or developmental trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Birth trauma

  • Grief and loss

  • Difficult or overwhelming life experiences

  • Intrusive or distressing memories

  • Negative beliefs about yourself

  • Emotional triggers and feeling stuck in painful patterns

EMDR isn’t about forgetting what happened. It’s about helping the past feel less overwhelming so you can feel more present and in control of your life today.
